Behçet Hastalığı

Behcet’s Disease

Behcet’s disease is a rare chronic health condition, a rheumatologic condition that causes inflammation of the blood vessels in different parts of the body. Also called Behçet’s syndrome, it is caused by an abnormal reaction in the immune system and can affect the body with infection-like symptoms.

The historical origin of Behçet’s disease dates back to the Turkish dermatologist and scientist Hulusi Behçet. In 1924, he began his research by describing the three main symptoms of his patients and published his findings in 1936. These important studies led to the name of the disease. In 1947, at the International Congress of Dermatology in Geneva, the disease was officially recognized.

The main features of Behçet’s disease are associated with abnormalities of the immune system. Although the immune system is tasked with protecting the body against foreign substances, in Behçet’s disease it mistakenly starts attacking its own tissues. Because of this, patients often experience inflammation in various parts of their body.
